Ability Awareness and Tolerance Week 2017

Burlingame School District is celebrating the diverse abilities of all children, of all people through Ability Awareness and Tolerance Week 2017.

“Start the Conversation” bracelets (distributed to Grade 4-8 students across all BSD school sites) will invite and encourage open discussion of ability topics.

Through various experiential activities, BSD students will be able to increase their awareness and understanding of the wide range of diverse abilities possessed by people in our community and the world. In doing so, they will also have the opportunity to cultivate greater empathy for the challenges faced by others and their experiences of living and learning.

Inspired by Rita F. Pierson, a 40-year educator passionate about connecting with every single one of her students, the theme for this year’s Ability Awareness and Tolerance Week is “Every Child Needs a Champion!”

Every child deserves a champion – a [person] who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be. – Rita F. Pierson

Being a “C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N” for others can involve taking actions and extending ourselves in ways that acknowledge and embrace the unique qualities and diverse abilities of others, assisting them to grow and become their greatest possible self.

The 2017 Ability Awareness and Tolerance Pledge:

I pledge to be a CHAMPION:

Offer support

BSD students will have opportunities this week to explore this pledge and respond to its message through their own actions.
