Ability Awareness Week

BSD Students Celebrate Ability Awareness Week with “Stand in the Light”

To further celebrate Ability Awareness, students across the district learned the melody and lyrics to Stand in the Light, popularized by Jordan Smith. With its message of respect and acceptance of the unique nature and abilities of each and every one of us, it made for an uplifting experience. Connecting to this week’s theme that "Every Child Needs a Champion", teachers are invited to discuss the words to the song as a backdrop of what it means to be seen as uniquely you and to be accepted for who you are in everyday life.

Enjoy the message and the music in this montage video produced by KBIS students (with special thanks to John Collaros, Carol Prater, BSD Choir accompanists, David Griffin, Kristi Birrell and the KBIS student team).

Stand In The Light

Jordan Smith

Stand in the light and be seen as we are...

Didn't I tell you I hear what you say

Never look back as you're walking away

Carry the music, the memories and keep them inside you...

Laugh every day

Don't stop those tears from falling down

This is who I am inside

This is who I am, I'm not gonna hide

Cause the greatest risk we'll ever take is by far

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

So stand in the light and be seen as we are

With courage and kindness, hold on to your faith

You get what you give and it's never too late

To reach for the branch and climb up, leaving sadness behind you...

Fight hard for love

We can never give enough

This is who I am inside

This is who I am, I'm not gonna hide

Cause the greatest risk we'll ever take is by far

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

So stand in the light and be seen as we are

Riding the storms that come raging toward us, we dive

Holding our breath as we break through the surface

With arms open wide, with arms open wide

This is who I am inside

This is who I am, I'm not gonna hide

Cause the greatest risk we'll ever take is by far

To stand in the light and be seen as we are

So stand in the light and be seen as we are
