Kindergarten 2012-2013 Important Announcements

The Burlingame School District extended day Kindergarten will start in the 2012-2013 school year. Students will attend school from 8:30a.m.until 2p.m. The first few weeks of school students will have an abbreviated schedule. More information will be provided in school newsletters home and at Kindergarten Orientation at the school sites.
The District is excited to announce we will be providing an extended day kindergarten program for the 2012-2013 school year. Class size for kindergarten will be reduced from approximately 27 students to 22 or 23 students in a class. This number aligns with our current primary program in Grades 1 through 3. Recent legislation requiring districts to implement a “Transitional Kindergarten” program provided an opportunity for the District and Board to restructure our current kindergarten program. At a Board Work Study Session in October, research was presented that correlates long lasting student success with half-day preschool attendance and an extended kindergarten day. An extended kindergarten day will provide students with opportunities to learn with developmentally appropriate activities that include leaning in social settings. In addition the reduced class size allows for all students to arrive at school at the same time and allows for more flexible small group instruction. A District Committee is currently working on a schedule that will be published on the BSD webpage and in school newsletters by the end of January.
