“We live in a global era that shapes world politics, commerce, the environment, and international relations. Our increasingly connected world cries out for cultural understanding and for the desire and the ability of different nationalities to communicate.”
Lore Carrera-Carrillo & Annette Smith
Burlingame School District Board recognizing the need to better prepare our students for the 21st century approved the development of the Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program in the fall of 2007 at McKinley Elementary School. The Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program provides an immersion model for English-speaking students and a bilingual model for Spanish-speaking students. The content of the curriculum is the same as English-only classrooms and meets all the state standards. The goal of the immersion program is to make students, whether they enter as English or Spanish speakers, fully bilingual by fifth grade.
